The Numbers Tell the Story of Jul 2021
The great news in July 2021 is that the total passenger trips continued to increase when compared against 2019 but for the first time this year, it decreased when compared to the previous month (not by much). Total sales also dropped off in July 2021 when compared to the previous month. The average ticket price continues to grow and has been consistently increasing every month this year and when compared to last year, it has increased by 129%. Similarly, EMD sales & transactions decreased for the first time all year.
Total Sales - an increase of 1059% vs 2020 Year over Year (YoY) but a decrease of 50% vs 2019.
- Jul 2019 - $8.0 Billion
- Jul 2020 - $387 Million
- Jul 2021 - $4.1 Billion
Average Ticket Price - an increase of 129% YoY but a decrease of 8% vs 2019.
- Jul 2019 - $498
- Jul 2020 - $355
- Jul 2021 - $458
Airline Fees - an increase of $0.8B YoY but a decrease of 50% vs 2019.
- Jul 2019 - $1.6 Billion
- Jul 2020 - ($55 Million) - this is a negative due to refunds

Total Passenger Trips - an increase of 329% YoY but a decrease of 33% vs 2019.

Total EMD Transactions - We are seeing more EMD transactions than 2019 levels. An increase of 466% YoY AND an increase of 125% vs 2019.

Average EMD Value - a decrease of 10% YoY and a decrease of 17% vs 2019.

What is EMD? EMD transactions indicate sales of ancillary services (e.g. premium seats) and other miscellaneous services settled separately from the airline ticket used for travel.
